Gala Bingo Help Find Conman 0
Posted on 8, September 2014
We all know what a cowboy builder or a rogue trader is but for the most part we will have avoided becoming victims of them. However, imagine sitting in you local Gala Bingo hall and a chap who ripped your off for £230 a week or so prior barges past you. That is exactly what happened to one octogenarian at the hall in Hanley during his night out.
John Boy Hamer had duped numerous victims out of hundreds of pounds, conning them into believing they needed various jobs done on their homes, taking the cash and never coming back to do the task he had been paid for.
His victims include:
- • An Abbey Hulton woman who he took £100 from to repair her roof but disappeared when she went to get a pen.
- • A Fegg Hayes man who he tried to get to pay £35 to repair three roof tiles – the man didn’t pay.
- • A pensioner from Stockton Brook who handed over £250 for repairs that were never done.
- • A Hanley woman who gave him £120 for repairs to her roof, repairs that were never undertaken.
At the time of his arrest Hamer had eluded capture for several months but when the pensioner recognised the rogue trader in the Gala Bingo hall, the police were able to trace him through his membership card with the club. He was arrested at his home in Walton Way, Talke in 2013. He was jailed at Stoke On Trent Crown Court for five years recently after admitting a string of offences.
