Mecca Bingo In South Shields To Close 0
Posted on 19, August 2014
Despite the drop in the amount of tax levied against the land based bingo industry recently we are still seeing the closure of some halls. The latest is the Mecca Bingo hall in Dean Street, South Shields – a club that is set to close to players in just under a month on September 14th. The Rank Group, who own Mecca have confirmed that due to the expiration of the lease, which they do not plan to renew, the building will no longer operate as a Mecca Bingo club from this date.
There are 31 staff at the club, some full time and others part time, with some of them being employed at the hall for nearly 40 years. These staff were only informed on Wednesday of last week that their Mecca Bingo hall was to be closing and needless to say, are more than a little miffed.
They are being consulted about finding alternative employment within the company with plans to relocate to other premises in Gateshead or Sunderland. However some may not wish to travel and will choose to take redundancy.
It’s not only the staff that are not best pleased about the impending closure of the club, an article in the Shields Gazette [original can be read here] revealed how some patrons of the Mecca Bingo hall were feeling. A young player, Nicole Mullen who is just 19, has only been a member a year but is shocked by the news. She tells how her Mum used to visit the hall when she had cancer as a way of escaping the every day drama that goes with the disease. She said “I am devastated that the club is closing.”
